Huntsman Scholars to help mentor TEAM students

Michael Peine, a sophomore marketing major in the Huntsman Scholar Program, said he looks forward to helping TEAM members gain confidence that they can attend college. This semester, students in the Huntsman Scholar Program, an honors program at Utah State University, are helping TEAM with mentoring. Peine said the Huntsman Scholars will strive for a one-on-one connection with high school students at TEAM and help them prepare for college.

Adam Stewart, one of the group's leaders said, "The Huntsman Scholars Program is centered around mentoring, so helping TEAM is a great way to extend our resources to the community."

Andrew Izatt, another leader, added, "It is wonderful to see our group come together behind a cause and strengthen our community."

Brandon Estoque, a junior marketing major in the program, said the ability to mentor is an important skill for anyone to have, and he looks forward to being able to have a positive impact on others.

“You get so busy with school and work and trying to keep on top of everything that it’s really nice having something that you’re impacting other people,” Estoque said. “It’s not about you.”

Aniko Pearson is impressed with the excitement and commitment of the TEAM students. She said, "I think it's awesome that these kids are so motivated to participate in the program outside of school."

According to Peine, every semester the scholars focus on a different service project. Sometimes their service is focused on other countries, and other times they are more local. This year, they decided it would be the latter.

“We decided this one would have a lot of impact,” Peine said. Because of their involvement with TEAM, the program has already been able to open a new site that will remain at Logan High and have a heavier focus on academic tutoring. This new site will allow the TEAM Mentoring program to serve 3 specific groups of students whose needs we have not been able to meet up to this point:

  • Students who have a difficult time getting to Wilson Elementary,
  • Students who need to spend a little more time with the academic tutoring and less time with the enhancement academics like- teambuilding, 4-H and service, and
  • Students who have language barriers and special language needs that will really benefit from the one-to-one mentoring.

In addition to mentoring, some of the Huntsman Scholars are helping with other projects to strengthen the program including assisting with the social media campaign, doing the monthly newsletter, writing press releases and other marketing tasks.

"This is a great opportunity to connect with new people and reach out to other organizations within Cache Valley," Sadie Crabb adds.

The Huntsman Scholar Program has already had a tremendously positive impact on TEAM Mentoring and there are plans for many more good things to happen throughout the semester!

THANK YOU, Huntsman Scholars!
You are making a positive difference!!

The Huntsman Scholar Program is designed to give students academic, leadership and service opportunities that are not typically offered to undergraduates. More details about what they do can be found on this video found on their website, http://huntsman.usu.edu/scholars/

TEAM Building: Secret Handshakes

When members of TEAM get together during the week, they do fun exercises as a way to strengthen their interpersonal skills. This is called "TEAM Building." On Wednesday, everyone made up a fun handshake with a partner and showed it off. Here are some photographs of them (note: some are fuzzy because they were all taken with an iPhone camera):

After everyone showed off their new, cool ways of greeting people, Victoria Stafford and Shayla Tyler, TEAM youth who were the youth leaders over teambuilding that day, explained that the purpose of the exercise was to get people working together and to be creative.

"Creativity gets your brain flowing," Tyler said.

Announcing: Youth Leadership Summit 2014

Looking for something to do Friday? Come to the Youth Leadership Summit at Utah State University. There will be leadership training, free food, fun team building exercises, awesome people, and a Key Note address by H. Craig Petersen, the Mayor of Logan City.

The event takes place at the Living Learning Center, or LLC, an apartment complex between Old Main and the LDS Institute building on USU campus from 9:30a-3:00p. Registration will take place beginning at 9:30 a.m. The event itself starts with a workshop at 10 a.m., followed by the Key Note address from Petersen, lunch and a variety of service projects. The Summit will conclude at 3 p.m.

Parking arrangements are still being worked out, but you will be able to park at stadium parking and take the USU shuttle up to the LLC. Parking passes will be available from 9:15-9:45. In order to avoid long lines and crowding the already full USU buses we strongly encourage you to carpool to campus. The driver of the car can drop those in the car off at the LLC either in the roundabout just West of the LLC or at the West entrance to the LLC parking located at 600 North and 700 East. Walk through the parking lot and take the stairs or elevator up to the ground level.

GenerationOn Joy Maker Ambassadors

Ed Haines's photo.

It has been a great December being Joy Maker Ambassadors. Everyday at TEAM we talk about
and record the acts of service we have done. At first some TEAM members did not think they were doing any kind acts, but with some prodding they were all able to see things they had been doing throughout the day without even thinking of it being a kind act IE. opening the door for someone, talking to a friend, meeting someone new, saying hi to someone in the hall etc. Plus all the great service they have been participating in at TEAM: mentoring the elementary students, filling up backpacks full of food for the children with food security issues, making holiday tiles for loved ones etc.

We loved doing our spread the bread project that GenerationOn funded. Our next step was the 100 toys we were given to donate. It took us 3 days but we ended up wrapping over 150 gifts! We then were able to bring them to our local CAPSA center and DCFS center. They were so grateful for our donations and it felt so great to donate to such great causes!

There are still a few days left to record your acts of kindness HERE To help Hasbro donate toys to Toys For Tots!

Spread The Bread

Thanks again to GenerationOn for choosing TEAM to be Joy Maker Ambassadors. Don't forget to report your acts of kindness HERE until Dec. 20th and Hasbro will donate a toy for every act of kindness to Toys for Tots-so awesome!

GenerationOn also sponsored our Spread the Bread project, it was so great. We got to know some new TEAM-members and have a fun BUSY day together. Here are some pictures from the event.

Lending Library

Take a Book, Build a Memory
Donate a Book, Create a Smile

TEAM has decided to start a "lending library" or "book swap" for our community.
We want our community to grow together and feel more connected. We feel that doing this through books is unique and beneficial.

Our goal is to have 4-5 locations where there will be books available for people to swap from.
The management of the program lies with the public. If someone takes a book and does not leave one we just think it is better for them to have the book.

Check back when we have completed this project for a detail description and PICTURES!

Youth~ WE NEED YOU!!

Youth~ WE NEED YOU!!

TEAM is looking for youth who want to get involved as Social Media Specialists for TEAM or the Cache Valley Volunteer Center. This is EASY, FUN, and will allow you to use your creativity to make a positive difference. This opportunity will also put you on the leading edge of learning about scholarships, academic resources and service opportunities.

You will be assigned one organization and one social media median to work with-- facebook, twitter, pinterest, or the blog. This assignment will involve posting to that median 2-3 times per day as many days as possible. We will teach you where to find the content to post.

Just as a bonus~ this can be listed on your future college applications and job applications as your first 'job experience' with a skill that will be one of the most highly demanded skills in the job market. Knowing how to promote via social media will make you a 'hot commodity' in your field, regardless of what field you are planning to go into. This opportunity will increase your value as an employee significantly!

Come get involved! You can help us and WE CAN HELP YOU!!
